Security appliances and other edge devices are difficult to monitor in the same way as traditional servers. Full endpoint telemetry may not be available, and Wazuh may receive mainly syslog or device-generated events.
The source therefore defines a generic exploit and implant hunt for perimeter products including Fortinet, Ivanti, Cisco, Citrix NetScaler, PAN-OS, SonicWall, VMware, and similar systems.
Detection Query
full_log:("authentication bypass" or "admin login successful" or "super_admin" or "system.admin" or "command injection" or "core dumped" or "segmentation fault" or "integrity check failed" or "root shell" or "web shell" or "reverse shell" or "unauthorized configuration" or "configuration changed")The source recorded 3,245 matching events during the previous 30 days.
What the Query Covers
The terms span several security-relevant categories:
authentication bypass;
successful administrator activity;
administrator object changes;
command injection;
crashes;
integrity failures;
root shells;
web shells;
reverse shells;
unauthorized configuration;
general configuration changes.
This broad approach compensates for the limited host telemetry available on many appliances.
Why the Result Count Is High
Several query terms also occur in normal operational logs. Admin login successful and configuration changed, for example, can be completely legitimate.
The result count should therefore be considered a hunting dataset rather than a list of incidents.
Investigation and Prioritization
Group results by:
product;
device;
log message;
administrator account;
source IP;
time;
configuration object.
Rare terms such as root shell, web shell, or authentication bypass may be higher priority than routine administrator login messages.
Correlation Opportunities
Where possible, combine appliance logs with:
firewall traffic;
VPN authentication;
identity logs;
configuration backups;
file integrity information;
internal endpoint telemetry.
A suspicious edge-device event followed by unusual internal authentication can be particularly important.
Tuning Strategy
Product-specific parsing can greatly improve this generic hunt. Once the environment is understood, the broad query can be split into smaller detections for each appliance family.
Known administrators, management networks, and change windows can also reduce noise.
Operational Value
Edge systems are often directly exposed to untrusted networks and may have less endpoint visibility than servers.
A broad syslog-based hunt is therefore a useful starting point for identifying suspicious administrative, exploit, crash, or shell-related behavior across multiple appliance vendors.
